“How was it?” Mrs Claus asked as Nick and I let ourselves into Claus Cottage.

The ride back had been a quiet one, with Nick seeming thoughtful and pensive. I’d taken the opportunity to admire the scenery. The blanket of snow grew ever deeper but the streets were filled with people still.

The residents of Candy Cane Hollow were clearly better adjusted to winter conditions than the rest of the country. Most train routes in England ground to a halt as soon as there was so much as a leaf on the tracks, never mind a barrage of snow!

“It was fine. Ginger won, of course, and started making a tactless speech. I had to interrupt her but I don’t think she noticed,” Nick said.

I watched him carefully, wondering whether he was going to tell his mum about the elves protesting for her imprisonment.

“Ginger has thick skin. I’m sure if she did notice, she understood why you had to do it. Did you enjoy it, Holly?” Mrs Claus said with a smile.

“Oh! Yes! I’ve never seen anything quite like it before,” I admitted.

“You really have arrived at the best time of the year,” Mrs Claus said.

I wasn’t sure what Candy Cane Hollow must be like the rest of the year. Did the inhabitants get the January blues like the rest of the world? Did they make resolutions, take part in egg hunts at Easter, escape for a bit of sun in the summer? Or was this place a winter wonderland all year around? The thoughts were pointless. I’d have to return to my house soon enough, where there wasn’t so much as a piece of tinsel up.

I shook my head. I needed to focus on clearing Mrs Claus’ name. Then I could move on to sorting out the rest of my life.

“Mrs Claus, we have to consider who the killer might be,” I said.

Mrs Claus padded into the den and I saw that she was in the middle of polishing the Christmas tree decorations. She had a low stool set out and she sat down and continued on with the task.

I met Nick’s gaze and cocked my head.

“She thinks best when her hands are busy,” he said with a knowing grin.

Sure enough, Mrs Claus murmured as she polished the life out of a gold reindeer ornament.

“I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I just can’t believe anyone here in Candy Cane Hollow would do such a thing,” she said, finally.

“I know it’s hard to believe, but someone has done it. And Nick says there aren’t any hotels here, so it must be a local, right?”

“I know. It’s just so hard to imagine one of our own behaving like that.”

“Maybe if we could get to the bottom of Persephone’s notes that I found?”

“What notes were they, dear?”

“Not much. The police had already taken her computer when I got to the surgery. But her diary was still tucked into a drawer. There wasn’t much of interest in there, but it did talk about a wedding.
